This site was created by Ellen Gustafson as part of her graduate work for SI 641: Information Literacy Instruction at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI). This particular project grew out of several converging desires. Firstly, Ellen wanted to address the need she saw for meaningful instruction for middle school students on how to take notes. Secondly, she saw the creation of this module as an opportunity to dabble in the development of online course material, collaborative spaces, and digital learning opportunities. Thirdly, she hoped to create a site that was flexible enough to serve as a self-paced learning portal for students, a collaboration-centered forum for a class, and a learning management tool for information literacy instructors. Although the site itself is fully functioning and live, it speaks best when viewed as a proof of concept for a larger, more ambitious module. There is much still to be desired in the design and functioning of this site, but--at its best moments--it hints towards a future where digital tools can simultaneously enable student autonomy, self-directed learning, multi-modal interpretation, and peer-to-peer learning. Throughout this site, the student is invited to take the reigns to their own note-taking education while teacher and site designer serve as behind-the-scenes guides and support.
